Columbo: The India–Pakistan match will be held in Colombo at 7 p.m. today at the Premadasa Stadium. The two teams, who previously played against each other in the Asia Cup without shaking hands or even looking at one another, will now face off again in the World Cup following tensions between their respective cricket boards.

India has enjoyed clear dominance in head-to-head encounters in the T20 World Cup. Including the 2007 final, India has won seven matches. Pakistan’s only victory came in the 2021 clash in Dubai. With star player Abhishek Sharma returning after recovering from illness, India’s batting strength is expected to receive a major boost.

It will be difficult for Pakistan to contain players like Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. At the same time, Pakistan’s bowling attack may struggle to match the quality of Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy. As the Premadasa pitch is known to support spin, the toss could also play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

What was once seen as “politics apart, sport apart” has once again turned the India–Pakistan match into a reflection of the political tensions between the two nations. The contest has reached a stage where it is viewed as a matter of national pride. The match has shifted from being played in a spirit of peace, friendship, and sportsmanship to one marked by intense rivalry and hostility. The much-awaited clash begins at 7 p.m.

Ahead of the match, Sri Lankan police announced on Saturday that special security arrangements would be in place. After Pakistan declared that it would boycott the game in solidarity with Bangladesh, weeks of uncertainty prevailed. The match is taking place only after the intervention of the International Cricket Council, which held continuous discussions with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the weather is also expected to be unfavorable. Heavy rain is likely in the morning, though it is expected to ease by evening. Indications suggest that it may not completely disrupt the game. In Group A, both teams have won their first two matches. India currently leads the group on net run rate, and both teams have almost secured a place in the Super Eight stage. The winner today will move ahead as group toppers. India’s aim is to maintain its unbeaten record against Pakistan in the World Cup. Today’s match is also India’s first game outside the country in this tournament.
