Texas: Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli starts today’s United States Grand Prix from pole position, with a first chance to wrap up the 2026 Formula 1 world championship, though he needs a lot to go his way.

Antonelli beat Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds in Saturday’s qualifying at Circuit of the Americas, after Verstappen’s final lap was deleted for track limits. It was Antonelli’s seventh pole of the season and his first in eight races. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar was third.

Antonelli leads team-mate George Russell by 102 points, 340 to 238, with Lewis Hamilton third on 229 and Verstappen fourth on 221. Six races remain, with 150 points still available and no sprints left. To clinch the title in Austin, Antonelli must win while Hamilton finishes fifth or lower and Russell ninth or lower. That would leave him champion with five races to spare, and he would win on a count-back of race wins, eight to Russell’s three, even if the points were level.

Mercedes is playing down the prospect. Team principal Toto Wolff called it “not realistic” to talk about the championship. Verstappen, who has won the last two races, is also a threat. If Antonelli falls short on the next match, his more likely moment comes at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1.

At 20, he could become the youngest champion in the sport’s history. Sebastian Vettel’s record stands at 23 years and 133 days, and Antonelli has led the standings since the third round in Japan.

One caveat hangs over the finale. The final two races are still scheduled for Qatar and Abu Dhabi, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
