Ahmedabad: India secured the title of the 3rd T20 World Cup in a thrilling final. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India posted a massive total of 255 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In the 19th over, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs, losing all 10 wickets. Sanju Samson (89 off 46 balls), Ishan Kishan (54 off 25 balls), and Abhishek Sharma (51 off 21 balls) were instrumental in India’s big score. The explosive partnership between openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma gave India a solid foundation, with both playing crucial knocks to propel the team to a dominant position.

The New Zealand team, chasing a daunting target, had a disastrous start. By the time the powerplay was completed, they had already lost three wickets.

India Continues Its Dominance in T20 Cricket

India became the first country to win the T20 World Cup three times, and they are also the only team to win it back-to-back. The victory over New Zealand marked India’s fourth T20 World Cup final. India has previously won the T20 World Cup twice, in 2007 and 2024. From their first title in 2007 in South Africa to the latest triumph in 2024, India has cemented itself as the best team in the shortest format of cricket.

First Title (2007)

India clinched their first T20 World Cup title in the inaugural edition of the tournament. In a thrilling final at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium, led by MS Dhoni, the Indian team defeated Pakistan to claim the crown. India chased down Pakistan’s total of 157 runs, losing five wickets in the process. Gautam Gambhir top-scored with 75 runs.

Second Title (2024)

After a long wait of 17 years, India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, secured their second T20 World Cup title. In the final at Kensington Oval in Barbados, India defeated South Africa by 7 runs. This victory also made India the first team to win the T20 World Cup without losing a single match throughout the tournament.

In 2014, in a match at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, MS Dhoni's team lost to Sri Lanka in the final, finishing as runners-up.

India’s Outstanding Performances in T20 World Cups

Apart from their two titles, India’s consistent performances in the knockout stages have been noteworthy. After losing in the 2014 final to Sri Lanka, India reached the semi-finals in 2016 and 2022. The 2024 season is considered India’s best, thanks to the brilliant bowling performances from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, along with a solid batting lineup.

India’s Key Records in the T20 World Cup

Most Runs in a T20 World Cup Edition: The record for the most runs in a T20 World Cup edition was held by Virat Kohli, who scored 319 runs in 2014. However, the 2026 edition saw a new record set. Sahibzada Farhan smashed 383 runs in just 7 matches, surpassing all previous records. Farhan also became the first player in T20 World Cup history to score two centuries in a single edition.
