Asian Games 2026: P V Sindhu, Treesa-Gayatri, Tanisha-Dhruv All Bow Out in Quarterfinals

Nagoya: India's badminton campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 came to an end on Sunday as PV Sindhu, along with the women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and the mixed doubles duo of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila, all lost their respective quarterfinal matches in Ichinomiya City.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu went down 21-11, 18-21, 10-21 to world No. 4 and Tokyo Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China, despite playing her third match in under 24 hours after a busy schedule the previous day. Sindhu came out firing to take the opening game comfortably, and the second game stayed close, with the Indian holding an 11-10 lead at the break before the two players were locked level at 16-16. A smash from Sindhu edged her ahead 17-16, but Chen responded to force a decider, which she then dominated to seal the win and end India's medal hopes in the event.

Earlier in the day, world championship bronze medallists Treesa and Gayatri lost their quarterfinal 21-18, 21-8 to the world No. 5 Malaysian pair of Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan. The Indians stayed competitive for large stretches of the opening game before a late lapse let the Malaysians move ahead, and the momentum carried into a one-sided second game.

Tanisha and Dhruv also fell in the mixed doubles quarterfinals, losing a tightly fought three-game battle 14-21, 21-18, 18-21 to the world No. 1 Chinese pair of Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping, closing out India's badminton campaign at these Games without an individual medal.
