Ahmedabad: In a thrilling double Super Over match in Ahmedabad, South Africa defeated Afghanistan in a dramatic contest. The match, which earned entry into the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup, was decided by four runs.

Afghanistan nearly pulled off a victory in the final over of regular play, smashing three consecutive sixes and raising hopes of a remarkable win. However, they eventually fell short.

South Africa, who lost the toss and were asked to bat first, scored 187 runs for the loss of six wickets. Afghanistan matched the total by also scoring 187 runs, leading to a Super Over.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan scored 17 runs. South Africa also scored 17 runs but lost one wicket, forcing a second Super Over. In the second Super Over, South Africa posted 23 runs. Afghanistan, chasing a bigger target, managed only 19 runs.

The final scores were South Africa 187/6, 17/1, and 23/0, and Afghanistan 187, 17/0, and 19/2.

Afghanistan’s strength came from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a brilliant half-century against the Proteas. He made 84 runs off 42 balls, hitting seven sixes and four fours. With his aggressive batting, Afghanistan crossed 50 runs within four overs. However, the team soon faced trouble at 53/3 after losing three quick wickets. Ibrahim Zadran (12 runs off 10 balls), Gulbadin Naib (0 runs off 2 balls), and Sediqullah Atal (0 runs off 3 balls) were dismissed early.

Despite the setbacks, Gurbaz continued to build the innings. He added 62 runs in partnership with Darwish Rasooli (15 runs off 18 balls) before getting out when the team score reached 120. The middle order failed to accelerate, which caused the scoring rate to stagnate.

In a final attempt to save the team, Noor Ahmad scored 15 runs off 9 balls, helping Afghanistan level the score and force a Super Over.

South Africa did not have the best start. The team lost Aiden Markram (5 runs off 8 balls) early, despite his good form in previous matches. Ryan Rickelton (61 runs off 28 balls) and Quinton de Kock (59 runs off 41 balls) steadied the innings and built a strong partnership of 114 runs. South Africa crossed 120 runs in just 12 overs.

However, the middle order could not accelerate much. Dewald Brevis (23 runs off 19 balls), Tristan Stubbs (1 run off 2 balls), and Marco Jansen (16 runs off 7 balls) failed to make major contributions. David Miller remained unbeaten on 20 runs off 15 balls.

For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai took three wickets, while Rashid Khan claimed two wickets.
