Mathura: Five students died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning an underground water tank at a school in Uttar Pradesh. The deceased have been identified as Manu Kattara from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Devansh Sharma from Vidisha, and Prayag Raj, Aryan Pandey and Vishu Sharma. One student who sustained serious injuries is undergoing treatment.

The tragic incident occurred at Maharshi Panini Gurukul in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The students entered the water tank to inspect it after a foul smell was noticed from the reservoir, which had a submersible pump installed in it. The tank was around 12 feet deep.

Mathura District Collector Chandra Prakash Singh said the deaths were caused by a toxic gas leak inside the tank.

One student initially entered the tank. When he did not return even after some time, four other students went inside after him. Hearing the children's cries, nearby residents rushed to the spot and brought them out.

A detailed investigation into the incident has been launched.
