UK, Modi React to Ahmedabad Plane Crash, Aid Efforts Begin

New Delhi: In the aftermath of the tragic plane crash near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, the British High Commission in India stated it is working closely with local authorities to urgently ascertain the facts and provide necessary support.
The London -bound Air India flight AI 171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The airline confirmed that 242 people, including 12 crew members, were onboard. Among them were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian citizen. Several casualties are feared.
“We are aware that a flight from Ahmedabad to London has crashed near Ahmedabad airport. We are working with local authorities to urgently establish the facts and provide support. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” the British High Commission said in a statement on its official X handle, along with a link to its travel advisory.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Calling the incident “heartbreaking beyond words,” Modi said he was in constant contact with ministers and authorities overseeing relief efforts.
“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected. I have been in touch with ministers and authorities working to assist those affected,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
