New Delhi: Dr. V Sivadasan MP has submitted a Notice of Motion for the Suspension of Rules in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting serious concerns regarding the privatisation of satellite spectrum.
In his motion, Dr. Sivadasan pointed out that recent reports of Jio and Airtel partnering with Elon Musk's Starlink to provide high-speed satellite internet in India raise significant issues related to spectrum allocation and national security. He cited the Supreme Court’s ruling in the 2G case, which mandates that spectrum allocation must be conducted through transparent auctions rather than private agreements. If Jio and Airtel proceed with their partnership with Starlink, it could constitute a legal violation.
He further emphasised that satellite spectrum is a vital national resource that should be reserved for strategic purposes, such as defence and ISRO operations. Allowing private companies to control satellite spectrum and orbital slots could compromise India's access to critical data on natural resources, weather, agriculture, and defence—sectors that should remain under national control.
Dr. Sivadasan also warned that satellite telecom services play a crucial role in national security. He referenced the recent example of the US threatening to cut off Starlink services to Ukraine, underscoring the risks of relying on a foreign company for satellite communications. He cautioned that permitting Starlink to dominate India’s satellite communications sector could undermine national sovereignty and security.
