New Delhi: The Government of India has revoked the detention of Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, nearly six months after he was arrested following protests in Leh.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the decision to cancel the detention order was taken “after due consideration” and with the aim of fostering an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh. The ministry added that the move was intended to facilitate constructive dialogue with stakeholders in the region.

Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, after violence broke out during protests in Leh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. Authorities had invoked the National Security Act to maintain public order following the unrest, which resulted in several casualties and injuries.

The government noted that the activist had already served nearly half of the maximum detention period permitted under the law. It also said it has been engaging with community leaders and other stakeholders to address concerns raised by people in the region.

Meanwhile, a petition filed by Wangchuk’s wife challenging his detention remains pending before the Supreme Court of India, which had scheduled further hearings in the matter.

His release came two days ahead of the mega peace rallies called by Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), which are fighting for statehood and Sixth Schedule statusin Ladakh. The revocation of the detention order is expected to lead to Wangchuk’s release from jail.
