New Delhi: The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has withdrawn the restrictions it had earlier imposed on Indian vessels sailing through the Gulf region, including the Strait of Hormuz. The DGS had previously placed curbs on shipping traffic through the area and on the deployment of Indian seafarers in conflict-affected zones. However, authorities have advised ships operating in the region to remain cautious and to closely monitor naval advisories.

The shipping regulator clarified the matter in a revised order issued on Friday, stating that there is no bar on continuing ship services or deploying Indian seafarers, provided the safety protocols laid down by coastal nations and security agencies are strictly followed.

The official notice said the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched extensive measures to evacuate seafarers stranded in the region, with the IMO, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, and the Maritime Information Cooperation and Awareness Centre jointly coordinating these efforts.

The DGS's fresh directive came out just a day before the US carried out air strikes on Iran. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on targets in Kuwait and Bahrain. The DGS said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation, and that it is coordinating its efforts jointly with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Navy, Indian embassies abroad, and other security agencies to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers.
