Environmental Activist Sonam Wangchuk Released from Jail

Sonam Wangchuk
Jodhpur: Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has been released from jail. Wangchuk's arrest occurred two days after protests broke out in Leh, demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26 last year, following orders from the Leh District Magistrate.
The NSA was imposed on him for allegedly inciting youth to attack through provocative speeches. However, with the government order issued on Saturday afternoon revoking the NSA, Wangchuk was released from jail. The central government explained that the action was taken to ensure peace in Ladakh and to create an atmosphere conducive to discussions with various groups.
However, investigative agencies have not yet been able to present evidence in court to charge Wangchuk under the NSA. Wangchuk had been in detention at Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan.
