New Delhi: Police have arrested eight individuals in connection with an alleged terror conspiracy targeting Delhi, PTI reported on Sunday, with preliminary investigations pointing to possible links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency and extremist groups based in Bangladesh.

The accused were detained by the state police forces in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, based on specific intelligence inputs suggesting preparations for terrorost attacks. They will be handed over to Delhi for further questioning. Six of the suspects were arrested in Tamil Nadu, while two were taken into custody from West Bengal, authorities said.

Among those apprehended, several are believed to be Bangladeshi nationals, and police found that some had been living in India with forged identity documents, including counterfeit Aadhaar cards, officials told reporters. The suspects were allegedly employed in garment units in Tamil Nadu and used their positions as cover while allegedly sharing extremist content and conducting reconnaissance.

During search operations, investigators seized dozens of mobile phones and SIM cards, which are now being analyzed to uncover possible communication with handlers and assess the broader network behind them. Central security agencies are assisting the Special Cell as the inquiry continues.

The arrests come on the heels of a recent intelligence alert in Delhi about a potential attack, including threats to high-profile sites such as the Red Fort and other religious landmarks. Officials said parts of the alleged plan may have included staging violence to create instability and spread extremist messaging.

Delhi Police have stressed that the investigation remains active, with further questioning expected to clarify the suspects’ roles and any external connections. Security has been tightened in key areas of the capital as a precautionary measure while authorities pursue leads.
