Thiruvananthapuram: Vijayakumari, 54, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, gave new life to five people through organ donation after she was declared brain dead following a sudden medical emergency. Her family consented to donate her organs, setting an example of humanity in a moment of deep personal loss.

Vijayakumari was employed at a resort in Palode. On the morning of February 7, she was travelling to work on a scooter with her son Abhijith when she suddenly felt dizzy near Palode and fell to the roadside. She was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where doctors later confirmed brain death.

In the midst of their grief, her husband Karunakaran Nair and children K J Abhijith and K J Krishnendu took the courageous decision to donate her organs so that others could live. Their decision brought life-saving support to patients waiting for transplants.

Her liver, two kidneys and two corneas were donated. One kidney was given to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The other kidney and the liver were allocated to KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The corneas were handed over to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in the city.

Health Minister Veena George paid tribute to Vijayakumari and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family. The organ donation process was coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), ensuring that the organs reached the recipients in time.

Even in death, Vijayakumari’s final act has brought renewed hope to five families.
