Thiruvananthapuram: CPI M Central Committee Member leader and K K Shailaja MLA has said that the Opposition failed to make any attempt to move an adjournment motion in the Kerala Assembly over the alleged gold smuggling at Sabarimala, and that the House was stalled because the Opposition feared that a discussion would bring the facts to light.

She said the Kerala government is willing to discuss any issue that affects the public. If an adjournment motion had been moved on the alleged gold smuggling at Sabarimala, the government would have allowed it. However, the UDF chose to step back, knowing that a debate would expose lapses on its own side, she alleged.

Shailaja said it was not the Left that facilitated Potti’s entry into Sabarimala, but it was the Left government that ensured those who committed wrongdoing were sent to jail. She pointed out that photographs have surfaced showing Potti and the person who allegedly purchased the gold standing alongside Sonia Gandhi in an area that is not easily accessible to ordinary devotees. Referring to images that suggest a close association, including one in which Sonia Gandhi appears to be presented with a bracelet, she questioned why the Opposition has remained silent on this issue.

She also criticised the Opposition for not raising its voice even against the Governor for keeping Bills pending without granting assent. Instead of cooperating to address people’s issues and support development initiatives, the Opposition is creating disruptions and obstructing the functioning of the Assembly, which she described as undemocratic.

The government has a responsibility to protect the assets of Sabarimala, Shailaja said, adding that it welcomes the court-directed investigation. If the probe finds anyone guilty, irrespective of their political affiliation, the government will not shield them and will ensure that strict punishment is imposed.
