Malappuram: The Malappuram district-level Crime Branch is intensifying its investigation into a large-scale investment fraud case implicating T P Haris, a member of the Malappuram District Panchayat and prominent leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Haris was arrested in August 2025 at Mumbai airport upon his return from the Gulf, following a lookout notice issued against him in connection with a multi-crore scam.
According to official reports, Haris allegedly defrauded over 200 victims, including local businessmen and party workers, by promising high returns through investment schemes linked to purported government-related projects such as three-wheeler distribution, medical equipment supply, and solar panel installations.
The total amount collected under these false promises is estimated to be around Rs. 25 crore. Many of those defrauded are reported to be IUML sympathizers and workers, fueling political tensions in the United Democratic Front (UDF)-led district panchayat. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded a comprehensive probe into the role of IUML leadership in curating the fraud.
E Jayan, CPM Malappuram district secretariat member, said, “The case cannot be whitewashed by restricting the investigation to just TP Haris. The entire district panchayat leadership faces allegations, and the League leadership must break its silence.”
Malappuram District Panchayat Secretary S Biju has also been named as a co-accused in the case, suggesting a potentially wider network behind the fraudulent activities. The IUML has suspended Haris from the party pending an internal inquiry.
Deputy Superintendent of Police C Alavi is leading the Crime Branch inquiry, with senior officials supervising the case. The investigation focuses on tracing the flow of illicit funds and uncovering any additional accomplices. Authorities anticipate further arrests as more victims come forward with complaints.
