Thrissur: Education Minister N Shamsudheen defended the arrangements for the state school games following an accident at a competition venue in Thrissur, attributing the incident to unexpected rain and strong winds.

The minister said the competitions had been scheduled at different venues after considering the facilities available at each location. According to him, the issue occurred only at the aquatic complex, where the swimming events were being held. He said any lapses on the part of officials would be examined.

The minister also said that some people were interested in portraying the organisation of the school games in a negative light.

Meanwhile, Thrissur MLA Rajan J Pallan sharply criticised the Education Department over the organisation of the school games in the district. He alleged that the UDF leadership was trading accusations in an attempt to evade responsibility for the lapses.

Five people, including competitors, were injured after the structure at the swimming competition venue collapsed. However, police have not registered a case, saying they have not received a complaint in writing in connection with the incident.

Teachers, parents of competitors and coaches alleged that the games were organised without adequate preparations. They said the 24 events in the games category were distributed among eight districts and conducted without proper coordination.
