Thiruvananthapuram: Even after 35 years, Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram stands tall as one of India’s most successful IT hubs, continuing to outperform in job creation, efficiency, and steady growth.

The park has now hit a major milestone, it provides direct employment to 80,000 professionals. Remarkably, nearly half of them are women.

The last five years have been particularly significant for Technopark, witnessing rapid expansion in workforce numbers and software exports. From 63,000 employees in 2020–21, the count grew by 27 percent to 80,000 in 2024–25. IT Secretary Seeram Sambashiva Rao highlighted that 45 per cent of the workforce are women, underscoring the park’s commitment to providing a secure and empowering environment for female professionals.

The park also recorded a 56 per cent jump in software export revenue during this period. From 8,501 crore rupees in the financial year 2021, the revenue increased to 13,255 crore rupees in FY 2024. Currently, Technopark has a built-up space of 12.72 million square feet and houses more than 500 IT and IT-enabled service companies, ranging from multinational giants to small and medium enterprises and startups.

G Vijayaraghavan, the founding CEO of Technopark, described this growth as particularly impressive given the global stagnation in the IT sector. He stated that a 27 per cent increase in jobs during such challenging times is a significant achievement and a reflection of Technopark’s potential to aim even higher. He recalled that during its early years, many had doubted the vision of generating 5,000 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs. But the years have proven the sceptics wrong. Technopark’s foundational goal of driving economic growth through employment generation has remained unchanged.

According to the IT Secretary, several key factors contributed to Technopark’s success even during periods of global uncertainty, including the pandemic. The rising global demand for digital transformation services was effectively leveraged. There was also increased interest in setting up Global Capability Centres, while Kerala’s robust skilling ecosystem and the government’s supportive policies for infrastructure and startups gave further momentum.

He also noted that Kerala offers a unique advantage as a workplace, clean air and water, abundant greenery, good connectivity, and low operational costs. The state’s strong social infrastructure and rapidly developing urban amenities make it an increasingly attractive place to work and live. As a result, Kerala is positioning itself as an ideal destination for investments not only in technology but also in other key sectors.

Technopark’s journey began in July 1990, entirely under the ownership of the Kerala government. Back in 1994, it had just two companies, 155 employees, and a built-up space of 1.07 lakh square feet. Today, that vision has matured into a thriving ecosystem of 500 companies, 80,000 employees, and 12.72 million square feet of workspace. As Technopark celebrates 35 years of innovation and resilience, it remains a powerful symbol of how sustained public investment and visionary planning can transform a region into a global technology destination.
