Six-Month-Old Baby Receives Liver of Aalin Sherin; Surgery Successful

Thiruvananthapuram: A six-month-old baby girl, Dhriya, has successfully undergone an emergency liver transplant at KIMS Health in Thiruvananthapuram. The liver used for the transplant was donated by 10-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham, a brain-dead donor, with the organ retrieved from Amrita Hospital in Kochi.

Dhriya's liver function had been severely compromised due to primary biliary atresia, a serious liver disease. At three months old, she underwent Kasai surgery at another hospital, but her liver function continued to deteriorate. Doctors recommended a liver transplant to save her life.

The surgery began at 10.30 pm on Friday and was successfully completed at 6 am on Saturday. KIMS Hospital authorities have reported that Dhriya's health is currently stable, with positive improvements in the metabolic parameters related to the transplanted liver.

Alin Sherin Abraham, the youngest organ donor in Kerala, tragically passed away after a car accident on February 7. She was traveling with her family from Kottayam to Thiruvalla via MC Road when the accident occurred near the Pallam Borma junction. Alin was first admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla before being transferred to Amrita Hospital in Kochi due to the severity of her injuries.

After being declared brain dead on Thursday, Alin's parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, made the selfless decision to donate her organs. In an inspiring act of generosity, they agreed to donate Alin’s liver, two kidneys, a heart valve, and two retina, providing life-saving organs to five individuals.

The organs were transported from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram on Friday night. Alin's two kidneys were donated to a child receiving treatment at the Pediatric Nephrology Ward of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College SAT Hospital. The heart valve was sent to Sree Chitra Institute, and the two retina were donated to Amrita Hospital in Kochi.

The family’s decision to donate Alin's organs has brought new hope and life to several others, despite their tragic loss. Alin’s legacy as Kerala’s youngest organ donor continues to inspire the community, underscoring the life-saving power of organ donation.
