Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam Forest Minister Shibu Baby John has said there is no “magic solution” in the hands of the government or any individual to immediately prevent wild elephant attacks in the state. Speaking to reporters, the minister described human-wildlife conflict as a complex issue that cannot be resolved overnight.

Referring to the death of a farmer in a wild elephant attack at Athirappilly, the minister said that the Forest Department bears the primary responsibility for preventing such incidents. He added that a detailed report on the incident has been sought and that a high-level meeting will be held in Chalakudy on Monday to discuss further measures.

The victim, Mohanan (65), a resident of Pullerkattu in Athirappilly, was killed in the early hours of Saturday after being attacked by a wild elephant. According to officials, the animal entered the inhabited area after crossing existing solar fencing installed to deter wildlife.

The minister announced that the victim's family would receive compensation of ₹14 lakh, with the first installment to be released immediately.

Meanwhile, an all-party meeting has called for a hartal in Athirappilly Panchayat until 6 pm in protest over the recurring wildlife attacks. Local residents have also announced a blockade of the Athirappilly–Anamalai state highway, demanding stronger measures to ensure the safety of people living in forest fringe areas.
