Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V D Satheesan said DCC member Chenthi Anil, who confronted him on the road, after withdrawing from the inauguration of a Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti celebration, has a criminal background.

Satheesan said there was a police report stating that the person organising the event had a criminal background. Following the report, he had been informed that the programme would be cancelled, the Chief Minister said at a press conference.

Satheesan said he had stepped out of his vehicle after seeing party workers standing along the road while he was travelling to another the programme in Chempazhanthy. He said nobody had stopped him, but Chenthi Anil spoke to him in an offensive manner.

“I was trying to prevent a confrontation,” Satheesan said, adding that the case was registered by the police on their own initiative.

When journalists asked how a person with a criminal background could become a DCC member, Satheesan replied that he did not know.

Asked about his alleged personal association with Chenthi Anil and reports that he had visited Anil's house, Satheesan said he had no personal acquaintance with Anil. He declined to answer further questions, saying he had nothing more to add.

On whether cases registered in Keralam in connection with the protest at Jantar Mantar would be withdrawn, the Chief Minister said the prescribed procedures were being followed.
