Kannur: Russian citizen Nathalia is amazed by Kerala's public healthcare system. She has much to share with the public, including the hospitality of the doctors and nurses who made her feel at ease by playing Russian songs when she was nervous in the operating theatre.
Nathalia arrived at Kannur Government Medical College in Pariyaram with an injury to her hand after falling from a scooter. The free services, modern facilities, and care at the hospital deeply impressed the young woman. She is currently pursuing a yoga diploma at the Thrikkaripur Chethana Yoga Centre and is the only foreign student enrolled in the course. Nathalia lives in Valiyaparamb, Thrikkaripur.
Her injury occurred when she fell off a scooter while riding with a friend. Initially, she sought treatment at a private hospital, but they quoted a cost of over Rs 80,000. Therefore, she opted for treatment at Kannur Government Medical College. After a check-up, she underwent an immediate operation. She was discharged after six days following an open reduction internal fixation surgery.
Nathalia was amazed by the modern tests and methods used before the surgery. "The professional expertise in treatment and care here is a model for the world," she said. "Living in another country without family support, I was very anxious. I didn’t have much money on hand. The doctors and nurses treated me with such kindness, which gave me a lot of comfort and confidence."
Her words reflect the positive changes in Kerala. She also visited the hospital for follow-up treatment on Thursday. Nathalia spent only a small amount of money, and she mentioned that such surgeries are much more expensive in Western countries, including Russia.
Medical Superintendent Dr. K. Sudeep noted that, thanks to timely and expert treatment, Nathalia is recovering quickly. The doctors from the orthopedics department who treated her, along with other staff members, were congratulated by the Principal of the Medical College, Dr. Sairu Philip.
