Thiruvananthapuram: LDF convenor T P Ramakrishnan on Monday said that recent allegations of police brutality largely pertain to old cases, asserting that, unlike previous UDF governments, the current Left administration has taken strict action against erring officers.
Recalling his own experience of torture during the Emergency, Ramakrishnan said, “I was brutally beaten without reason, and no action was taken against the police then. Under the LDF, however, lock-up brutality is completely unacceptable. Officers found guilty of misconduct are removed from service, and many corrupt personnel have been expelled over the past nine years.”
He emphasised that the government does not condone police excesses. “Even if the cases are old, they will be thoroughly examined, and appropriate action will follow. Anyone acting against government policy will face consequences,” he said, dismissing “misinformation circulated by right-wing media” suggesting a decline in public support. “The large turnout at our programmes demonstrates the people’s confidence in us,” he added.
On the controversy surrounding Congress MLA Rahul Mamkoottam, Ramakrishnan said the allegations against him were serious and called for decisive action by the Congress. “The complaints raised by women cannot be ignored, yet Rahul continues as MLA without any action,” he noted.
He also referred to the recent suicide of a Congress leader in Wayanad, attributing it to factionalism within the district unit. “If they cannot resolve their own internal conflicts, how can we expect them to address Rahul’s case? If he continues to attend the Assembly, who is accountable?” Ramakrishnan asked.
On another note, he said the Agola Ayyappa Sangamam is focused on the development of Sabarimala, with public opinion being sought on necessary improvements. “This is not a political event or affiliated with any political party,” he clarified.
