CM Pinarayi Warns of Rising Heat Wave; Debunks Viral Misinformation on Extreme Temperatures

CM Pinarayi Vijayan
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has issued a public advisory urging Keralites to exercise caution as summer temperatures rise across the state. In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister warned that temperatures are expected to climb sharply in the coming days — up to 40°C in Palakkad, 39°C in Kollam, and between 36°C and 37°C in other districts. He stressed that the accompanying rise in the UV Index must be taken seriously.
The Chief Minister advised the public to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 10 am and 3 pm, when ultraviolet radiation is at its most intense and the risk of heatstroke, skin ailments, and eye discomfort is highest. Those who must venture outdoors are urged to carry umbrellas, wear hats and sunglasses, and dress in light-coloured, full-sleeved cotton clothing. He called for special vigilance among motorcyclists, fisherfolk, and outdoor workers, who face prolonged exposure to the elements.
The Meteorological Centre has also forecast isolated light showers in some areas over the coming days, with the possibility of lightning-accompanied rain today.
Fake Temperature Alerts Being Circulated; CM Urges Public Not to Panic
The Chief Minister also flagged a disinformation campaign currently spreading through social media and WhatsApp, with fabricated messages falsely claiming that temperatures in Kerala will soar to between 45°C and 55°C. These messages are being circulated as purported official warnings. The Chief Minister clarified that the Indian Meteorological Department has issued no such forecast, and described the messages as entirely baseless.
He urged the public to verify all weather-related information only through official channels and to call the toll-free numbers 1070, 1077, or 1079 to confirm the authenticity of any alerts before sharing them further.
