Thiruvananthapuram: Several schools across Kerala are implementing a new classroom seating arrangement inspired by the Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan. The formation, featured in the film’s climax, arranges students in a U-shaped or semi-circular layout, eliminating the traditional concept of back benchers.

In this setup, the teacher stands at the open end of the U-shape, ensuring clear visibility of all students. The model aims to improve classroom interaction and reduce the chances of students feeling isolated or overlooked. Teachers also find it easier to monitor and engage with every student in the room.

The seating idea was first depicted in Sthanarthi Sreekuttan, the directorial debut of Vinesh Viswanath. Released in theatres on November 22, 2024, and made available on streaming platforms from June 20, 2025, the film tells the story of four mischievous students and concludes with the introduction of this new classroom model.

The change gained public attention when schools began posting photos of their new seating layouts and tagging the director on social media.

One of the first schools to introduce this arrangement was RVV HSS in Valakom, Kollam district. Other schools that have followed include Pappinisseri West LP School and Andoor ALP School in Kannur, RCC LPS East Mangad in Thrissur, GHSS Tholanur in Palakkad, and NSV VHSS Valacode in Kollam.

Educators involved in the shift report improved classroom engagement and a more inclusive environment. While still in early stages, the model is being closely watched by other institutions interested in enhancing student participation and visibility.
