Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League has run into trouble finalising candidates for two Kozhikode Corporation wards, with factional disputes holding up decisions in Puthur and Kovur. The party, which contested 24 seats last time and asked for 25 this time, has been unable to break the deadlock.

The UDF is now considering returning the seats to the Congress or fielding Congress-backed candidates as League nominees. A seat swap with Methottuthazham and Kovur is also under discussion. If talks fail, the League may have to put up an independent in Kovur. For now, the League is expected to contest Methottuthazham, while the Congress takes Kovūr. Discussions continue on placing a League candidate in Puthur.

Meanwhile, the UDF is facing criticism over alleged quiet understandings with communal groups as local polls approach. Congress leaders are reported to be in informal contact with BJP–RSS circles, while the League is said to be engaging with Jamaat-e-Islami. Both parties are seen trying to secure Hindu and Muslim vote blocs.

These moves have created unrest within both Congress and the League, with workers expressing dissatisfaction. Reports also suggest that Congress is exploring links with the BJP–RSS combine in other corporations as well. AICC member Ramesh Chennithala’s alleged closed-door meeting with BJP leaders in Kozhikode has added to the controversy.
