Kozhikode: Two patients who had been undergoing treatment for Shigella infection in Kozhikode district have recovered and been discharged from the hospital, according to the District Medical Officer (DMO). No active cases have been reported at present. However, health authorities have decided to continue preventive and surveillance measures in view of the recent fatality linked to the infection.

The DMO stated that intensified disease-control activities are being carried out in coordination with local self-government institutions. Officials are conducting inspections in areas where Shigella cases were reported, while chlorination drives and public awareness campaigns are also being undertaken to prevent further spread of the infection.

The renewed focus on preventive measures follows the death of a four-and-a-half-year-old girl who had been undergoing treatment for Shigella infection.

The deceased, Nila, daughter of Babeesh and Princy Mary of Puthalath, near Vallil Kadavu in Andikkode, was admitted to the Institute of Maternal and Child Health at Kozhikode Medical College on June 1 after developing severe diarrhoea. She had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit and passed away on Saturday morning.

Nila was a UKG student at M.I. L.P. School. She is survived by her parents and her brother, Milan.
