Kozhikode Medical College Marks 13th Success in Non-Open-Heart Aortic Valve Surgery

Kozhikode: Another successful transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been performed at Kozhikode Medical College without opening the heart. This is the thirteenth time that TAVR has been carried out at the medical college. Health Minister Veena George congratulated all the members of the medical college team who worked behind this achievement.
The TAVR procedure was performed on a 69 -year-old patient from Kasaragod. The patient, who has Parkinson’s disease, had previously undergone bypass surgery. He sought treatment at the medical college after developing severe narrowing of the aortic valve. Following evaluation, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was performed without opening the heart. A 35 mm Myval valve was implanted through a blood vessel in the leg to replace the aortic valve.
Under the guidance of Principal Dr Sajith Kumar and Superintendent Dr Sreejayan, the procedure was carried out by the team led by Dr Rajesh G (Head of Cardiology), Dr Rajesh S (Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery), Dr Kader Muneer, Dr Krishnakumar, Dr Dolly Mathew, Dr Sajir K T, Dr Suryakant, and Dr Radha K R.
