Yellow Alert in Eight Districts in Keralam as Heavy Rain Continues, Southern States Set for Strongest Monsoon Spell

Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam is likely to witness strong rainfall again today, with the India Meteorological Department declaring a yellow alert in eight districts where heavy rain is expected. The alert is in effect for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode, with isolated spells of intense rain forecast. Heavy rain, in this context, refers to rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
The IMD said light rain is likely in isolated areas of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Kasaragod districts over the next three hours. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the southwest monsoon is regaining strength nationally, with the weather monitoring centre stating that the south Indian states are likely to receive the strongest spells of rainfall in the country over the coming week.
Heavy rain may continue to lash Keralam and Mahe until the 23rd. Isolated spells of intense rainfall are likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Coastal Karnataka may receive heavy rain from the 21st to the 25th, while the northern and southern interior districts of Karnataka could see extremely heavy rain on the 22nd and 23rd. In addition, Lakshadweep is likely to receive heavy rainfall around the 21st.
