Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has warned that temperatures are rising across the state, with ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels increasing in several districts. A yellow alert has been issued today for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad districts.

The authority has urged the public to exercise caution, noting that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to sunburn, skin disorders, eye problems and other health complications. People are advised to take adequate safety precautions.

According to the authority, the UV index is typically at its highest between 10 am and 3 pm. Residents are therefore advised to avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these hours.

Outdoor workers, fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, those involved in water transport, bikers, tourists, individuals with skin or eye conditions, cancer patients and people with weakened immunity are urged to be particularly vigilant.

The public is advised to use protective measures such as wearing hats, carrying umbrellas and using sunglasses when stepping out during the day. Wearing cotton clothing that covers most of the body is also recommended. During travel or outdoor activities, individuals should take breaks in shaded areas whenever possible.

The authority further noted that UV levels are generally higher in mountainous and tropical regions. Even on clear, cloudless days, the UV index can remain high. Additionally, reflective surfaces such as water bodies and sand can intensify UV exposure, increasing the associated risks.
