Thiruvananthapuram: The level of Ultraviolet radiation is rising rapidly across Kerala, prompting the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority to issue alerts in several regions. Based on data from the past 24 hours, an orange alert indicating a high level of UV exposure has been declared in Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Munnar, and Thrithala. Authorities have urged residents in these areas to take serious precautions.

A yellow alert, indicating moderate risk, has also been issued in Kalamassery, Ollur, Ponnani, Beypore, and Mananthavady. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause sunburn, skin disorders, eye problems and other health issues. A yellow alert is issued when the UV index is between 6 and 7, an orange alert when it reaches 8 to 10, and a red alert when it exceeds 11.

Authorities warn that UV radiation is typically at its strongest between 10 am and 3 pm., and people are advised to avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these hours. Special caution has been advised for those who work outdoors, including fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, people involved in water transport, bikers, tourists, as well as individuals with skin diseases, eye conditions, cancer and weakened immunity.

People going outdoors during the daytime are advised to use protective measures such as hats, umbrellas and sunglasses, and to wear cotton clothing that covers most parts of the body. It is also recommended to take rest in shaded areas during travel or outdoor work. Since UV levels are generally higher in mountainous and tropical regions, residents in such areas are urged to be particularly cautious.
