Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places across Keralam from Saturday until Monday.

Authorities have warned that lightning can be extremely dangerous, posing serious risks to human and animal life, as well as to electrical and communication networks and household appliances. Since lightning may not always be visible, the public has been urged to strictly follow safety precautions.

Key Safety Guidelines:

  • At the first sign of lightning, move immediately into a safe building. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck.

  • During strong winds and lightning, keep doors and windows closed and avoid standing near them. Stay indoors and minimize contact with walls and floors.

  • Disconnect electrical appliances and avoid using them during thunderstorms.

  • Avoid using landline telephones during lightning; mobile phones are considered safe.

  • Do not allow children to play outdoors or on terraces when the sky is overcast.

  • Avoid standing under trees or parking vehicles beneath them during thunderstorms.

  • Stay inside vehicles during lightning, keeping hands and legs inside. Avoid traveling on bicycles, motorbikes, or tractors during this time.

  • Do not go to terraces or open yards to collect clothes when lightning is present.

  • Secure objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

  • Avoid bathing or collecting water from taps, as electricity may travel through pipes.

  • Stay away from water bodies; avoid fishing, boating, or swimming during thunderstorms. Move to the nearest shore immediately if already on water.

  • Do not fly kites or remain in elevated areas such as rooftops or tree branches.

  • Keep pets indoors; avoid tying them in open areas during thunderstorms.

  • If caught in an open area with no shelter, crouch low with feet together and head tucked between the knees.

  • Install lightning arresters in buildings and surge protectors for electrical devices.

Officials also emphasized that lightning strikes can cause severe burns, loss of vision or hearing, and even cardiac arrest. However, victims do not retain electric charge, and immediate first aid can save lives. The first thirty seconds after a lightning strike are critical, and prompt medical assistance should be provided.
