Kozhikode: The Keralam State School Sports Meet is set to begin in Kozhikode today amid concerns over heavy rain, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for the district, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains continue to lash Kozhikode. However, organisers believe the rain will not significantly affect competitions, citing the specialised modern facilities on the synthetic track at the NIT Stadium, the main venue.

The sports meet will be held from October 25 to 31. No competitions are scheduled for the inaugural day. The inclusive sports meet for differently abled children and various games competitions will begin on Monday, October 26.

The main athletics events are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 27. Around 10,000 young athletes across the state, along with officials and coaches, will participate in the event, taking the total number of participants to more than 15,000.

The inauguration will feature a march past involving around 4,000 athletes and a cultural programme with approximately 3,000 participants. Meanwhile, the Students remain concerned that the event could be affected if heavy rain continues over the coming days.
