Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to introduce a comprehensive school health programme aimed at promoting the overall well-being of children across the state. Announcing the initiative on Monday, Health Minister Veena George said the programme would be implemented jointly by the Health and General Education departments.

The scheme seeks to make children “ambassadors of health,” encouraging them to carry awareness not only within their schools but also to their homes and the wider community. “Children will play a crucial role in spreading knowledge about health and well-being, creating a culture of care from an early age,” the minister said.

Inaugurating the state-level observance of National Deworming Day, Veena George outlined that the school health programme would focus on the holistic development of every child. This includes attention to physical fitness, mental health, and intellectual growth, ensuring that children are supported in all aspects of their development.

As part of the initiative, students will receive personalised health cards. These cards are designed to systematically track each child’s health status and provide a structured method for regular monitoring and review. The minister highlighted that this approach would help identify health concerns early and allow timely interventions.

While the programme’s formal launch date is yet to be announced, officials indicated that preparatory work is already underway. The scheme reflects Kerala’s ongoing commitment to child welfare and aims to set a benchmark in integrating health education with school curricula. By empowering children as health ambassadors, the state hopes to cultivate a healthier, more aware generation capable of fostering well-being within their families and communities.
