Thiruvananthapuram: Relief from the intense heat wave is on the way for Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting isolated thunderstorms with lightning today and tomorrow, followed by heavier rain and strong winds from April 29 to May 1. Winds gusting between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour are expected alongside the rain from the 29th onwards, with rainfall totals of 64.5 to 115.5 millimetres forecast within 24-hour periods.

Yellow Alerts have been issued for the following districts: Pathanamthitta and Idukki on April 29; Kannur and Kasaragod on April 30; and Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad on May 1. Skies are expected to cloud over in the afternoons, with thunderstorms likely in the evenings.

Lightning Safety Advisory

With thunderstorms forecast, authorities have urged the public to take precautions from the moment dark clouds appear. At the first sign of lightning, move immediately into a secure building. Keep windows and doors shut during storms and avoid standing near them. Stay away from walls and floors. Disconnect electrical appliances from the mains and avoid using landline telephones — mobile phones are safe. Children and adults must avoid terraces and open areas. Never shelter under trees or park vehicles beneath them. If travelling in an enclosed vehicle, stay inside with limbs kept in. Cyclists and motorcyclists must stop and seek shelter until the storm passes.

Fisherfolk must head to shore at the first sight of storm clouds and suspend all fishing and boating. Do not enter water bodies during lightning. Do not bathe or collect water from taps during a storm, as current can travel through pipes. Do not fly kites or go to terraces to retrieve laundry during lightning. Secure loose objects that could be blown over by strong winds. Do not leave pets tethered in open areas during storms.

If caught in the open with no shelter, crouch with feet together, tuck your head between your knees, and curl into a ball. Lightning strike victims carry no residual charge — assist them immediately. The first 30 seconds are critical; seek medical help urgently.
