Kochi: The Kerala High Court has ordered the reworking of the KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical) entrance examination rank list. The court cancelled the revised formula introduced for normalising the marks of CBSE students.

The order was issued by a single bench while considering a petition challenging the revised mark normalisation formula. The state government is expected to file an urgent appeal before the High Court Division Bench against the ruling.

The petition was filed by Hana Fathima, a student who completed Plus Two under the CBSE syllabus. In her plea, she argued that the new formula for mark normalisation resulted in CBSE students losing the weightage they previously had. She also pointed out that the new formula contradicts the guidelines specified in the KEAM prospectus.

The state government had informed the court that the KEAM rank list is prepared by considering both the entrance examination score and Plus Two marks. Earlier, there were complaints that CBSE students received 15 to 20 marks less than their Kerala syllabus counterparts under the old formula. Based on these complaints, the government introduced a new formula that prevented such discrepancies.

The combined score is calculated out of 600 marks by adding the entrance exam marks and Plus Two marks. The government stated that the revised formula was intended to be included in the updated prospectus. However, the court observed that introducing such a change during the final phase of the admission process was incorrect, and issued its verdict accordingly.
