Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam is in the grip of a severe heat wave, with temperatures soaring to alarming levels across several districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Palakkad district, warning that temperatures are likely to rise further in the coming days. Palakkad recorded 40 degrees Celsius last Friday — the highest temperature logged in the state this season.

Other districts are also sweltering, with Kottayam and Kollam recording temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius. Meteorological observations indicate that most districts across the state could see the mercury climb two to four degrees above normal levels in the days ahead.

Health Warnings and Advisories

With the extreme heat posing serious risks of heat stroke, sunstroke, and dehydration, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a comprehensive set of precautionary guidelines. Residents have been strongly advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm. Construction workers, farmers, and street vendors have been directed to reschedule their working hours accordingly.

Authorities have also urged the public to drink plenty of water even when not feeling thirsty, and to avoid alcohol, coffee, and tea during daytime hours, as these beverages accelerate fluid loss.

Schools and Workplaces on Alert

Educational institutions and workplaces have been issued specific instructions. School assemblies and outdoor activities that expose children to direct sunlight must be suspended entirely. Examination halls are required to ensure adequate drinking water and proper ventilation for students.

Delivery personnel, journalists, and police officers who are required to work outdoors during peak hours have been advised to carry umbrellas and take precautions to avoid prolonged sun exposure. The SDMA has strictly prohibited leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles under any circumstances.

Fire Risk and Forest Areas

The authority has also flagged an elevated risk of fires as temperatures continue to rise. Markets and waste disposal sites have been directed to carry out fire safety audits and put preventive measures in place. Residents living near forest areas, as well as tourists, have been specifically warned to avoid conditions that could trigger or spread wildfires.

Anyone experiencing physical discomfort — including dizziness, nausea, or weakness — has been advised to immediately move to a shaded area and seek medical assistance without delay, the SDMA said.
