Thiruvananthapuram: The State Disaster Management Authority has issued a detailed heatstroke advisory, warning that outdoor workers and travellers are at high risk of sudden heatstroke as temperatures continue to rise across Keralam. Authorities stress that recognising symptoms early and administering prompt first aid can prevent serious harm.
Symptoms to Watch For
Severe headache — sudden and persistent; rapid pulse — an abnormally elevated heart rate; skin changes — skin that is red, hot, and dry to the touch; muscle cramps — intense cramping across the body; nausea, vomiting, and excessive shivering; and dizziness or loss of consciousness.
First Aid for Heatstroke
If you encounter someone suffering from heatstroke, act immediately:
Move them to safety — shift the person to a shaded or well-ventilated area and have them lie down. Call for help — contact an ambulance or seek medical assistance without delay. Elevate the feet — raise the legs slightly to improve circulation. Offer cool water — if conscious, give the person cool water to drink. Loosen clothing — remove or loosen tight clothing to allow air circulation around the body. Cool the body — spray cool water on the skin or wipe down with a wet cloth. Use a fan — direct airflow onto the person to help lower body temperature. Apply cold compresses — place cold wet cloths or ice packs on the armpits, wrists, ankles, and pulse points.
Public is urged to remain vigilant and to act without delay if they or anyone around them shows signs of heat-related illness.
