Kerala Fire and Rescue Services to Upgrade Disaster Response with Drones and Robotic Equipment

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Fire and Rescue Services (KFRS) is set to enhance its capabilities in disaster-prone and hard-to-reach areas through the acquisition of advanced drones, robotic fire-fighting equipment, and specialized vehicles.
The planned purchases include underwater drones equipped with cameras for search operations, aerial drones capable of carrying loads up to 10 kilograms, and remotely controlled robotic fire-fighting vehicles with built-in cameras and water-pumping systems. These robotic systems are designed to operate effectively in areas with intense fire and heavy smoke, ensuring safer and more efficient rescue operations.
For high-rise building emergencies, KFRS will also procure aerial ladder platforms and fire-fighting tower monitors. In addition, essential equipment such as breathing apparatus sets, scuba sets with diving suits, and air compressors for filling cylinders with air for water rescue operations will be purchased. The tender process for these acquisitions is expected to begin shortly.
Over the past nine years, the LDF government has invested over 600 crore rupees to modernize the state’s fire and rescue services. Of this, 60 crore rupees have been allocated in 2025, following 51.5 crore in 2024 and 72.5 crore in 2023. In 2023, a separate 10 crore rupees were set aside as a disaster relief fund.
