Kerala Assembly Pays Tribute to Late CPI(M) MLA Kanathil Jameela

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly on Wednesday paid tributes to CPI(M) MLA Kanathil Jameela, who passed away in November last year after battling cancer.
Speaker A N Shamseer recalled Jameela as a committed public representative who consistently stood for the rights of women and marginalised sections. He noted her contributions to social welfare, particularly in the fields of health and education, and said her death was a major loss to the state and to the people of the Koilandy constituency she represented.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Jameela’s political journey reflected her deep roots in local self-government institutions. He recalled her active involvement in public life and said she continued to take part in various initiatives even while undergoing treatment for her illness.
Speaking on behalf of Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan, UDF MLA K Babu said Jameela was known for her sincerity, hard work and honesty as a legislator. He said she would be missed in the Assembly.
Ministers Roshy Augustine and K B Ganesh Kumar, along with IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty and other members, also paid tributes. Following the condolence messages, the House observed a two-minute silence in her memory and then adjourned for the day.
Jameela was elected to the Assembly from Koilandy in 2021. Earlier, she had served as president of the Kozhikode District Panchayat and had a long association with public service and party work. A native of Kuttiyadi in Kozhikode district, she was born to T K Ali and T K Mariam. She is survived by her husband Abdul Rahman, a son and a daughter.
