Kochi: The KCBC Vigilance Commission has strongly condemned the arrest of two Malayali nuns in BJP -ruled Chhattisgarh on allegations of forced religious conversion. In a statement, the Commission described the arrests as extremely painful and deplorable. Vandana Francis and Preethi Mary were jailed after being falsely implicated by Durg police based on a complaint filed by Bajrang Dal activists, who alleged forced conversion and human trafficking.
The Commission pointed out that the arrest of the nuns is part of a growing pattern of hostility faced by Christians and missionaries across various parts of the country. It noted that extremist groups are weaponising anti-conversion laws, which is unjust and poses a serious threat to the constitutional rights of religious minorities in India.
The statement also clarified that Catholic missionaries do not engage in forced conversions. The Church's services in education, health, and social welfare are rooted in compassion and a commitment to the common good.
The freedom to choose and practice one's religion is a fundamental right under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. Any attempt to criminalise or suppress this right is a violation of constitutional values and weakens India's secular democratic ethos.
Legal action should be taken against those who made false allegations as well as those responsible for the unilateral arrests of the nuns. Necessary legal and administrative steps must be implemented to prevent such abuse of power in the future. In view of the increasing incidents of violence, harassment, and attacks against Christians and their places of worship, the Commission urged the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, and Minister for Minority Affairs to take immediate and decisive action.
The Central Government must not remain silent but act as a vigilant guardian of the constitutional rights of all citizens, regardless of religious background, and uphold communal harmony and justice.
The KCBC Vigilance Commission, through the statement, also called upon the government to take strong measures to curb religious fanaticism and mob violence, and to ensure that India continues to uphold its democratic, secular, and inclusive identity.
