Thiruvananthapuram: A cyclonic storm named Senyar has developed over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining parts of northeast Indonesia. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system intensified from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday morning. The cyclone currently poses no threat to the Indian coast, but a strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may bring light rainfall to isolated areas in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts in the coming hours.

Cyclone Senyar’s Movement and Expected Landfall

IMD reports that Senyar moved westwards at a speed of around 10 kmph through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and is likely to continue shifting in a west-northwestward direction. The cyclone is expected to make landfall along the Indonesian coast before noon today. It is forecast to retain its cyclonic strength for the next 24 hours before gradually weakening thereafter.

The name Senyar, meaning “lion” in Arabic, was submitted by the United Arab Emirates as part of the regional cyclone naming system.

IMD has issued rainfall warnings for several South Indian regions from November 26 to December 1. Kerala and Mahe may witness isolated rainfall on November 26. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are expected to receive showers from November 29 to December 1, while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are forecast to see heavy rainfall from November 26 to 29.
