From Pinarayi Vijayan to Veena George: A Pattern of Confrontational Protests by Congress, Affiliated Organizations

The recent attack on Kerala Health Minister Veena George has reignited concerns over a pattern of confrontational protest tactics by Congress-affiliated youth and student organizations.
A similar incident occurred on June 13, 2022, involving Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Two Youth Congress activists attempted to confront the Chief Minister aboard a flight from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. The individuals — Youth Congress Kannur District Secretary Naveen Kumar and Mattanur Block President Farseen Majeed — approached the Chief Minister while shouting slogans after the aircraft landed.
The situation caused alarm among fellow passengers, including women and children. The Chief Minister avoided harm after timely intervention by E. P. Jayarajan, who was traveling with him, along with other passengers.
Reports at the time indicated that the activists had purchased tickets on the same flight at the highest available fare. It was also reported that they informed airport authorities in Kannur that they were traveling to visit a patient at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram. The Congress leadership faced criticism from political opponents for publicly defending the protest, maintaining that it was an expression of dissent.
In the latest incident, Minister Veena George was attacked by members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) at Kannur railway station. She sustained injuries to her neck and hand and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The Congress, however, has described such actions as part of protest. The Youth Congress and KSU have increasingly adopted direct confrontation tactics, targeting ministers during travel rather than organizing demonstrations at designated venues or public meetings. Meanwhile, a section of the media is also portraying such incidents merely as protests rather than physical assaults.
