Thiruvananthapuram: Singer and activist Chinmayi Sripaada on Monday welcomed the Kerala government’s decision to challenge the sessions court verdict in the actress assault case, praising the state for standing firmly with the survivor.

Reacting to the government’s announcement that it would move an appeal against the verdict which acquitted actor Dileep, Chinmayi wrote on social media, “This is where Kerala is the rockstar. Will always be. Instead of platforming rapists and dancing with them or letting them out on bail to celebrate birthdays.”

Earlier in the day, the Ernakulam Sessions Court delivered its verdict, finding the first six accused guilty on multiple charges, including rape, criminal conspiracy, wrongful confinement, destruction of evidence, and the filming and circulation of obscene visuals. The eighth accused, Dileep, was acquitted.

Following the verdict, Kerala Law Minister P. Rajeev said the state government would challenge the ruling in higher courts, maintaining that the survivor had not received complete justice.

In a detailed social media post, Rajeev said the government “stands firmly with the survivor in the actress assault case and will move an appeal to ensure that justice is pursued to its fullest extent.” He added that from the very beginning, the government had remained committed to supporting the survivor and upholding her faith in the justice system. “Every step of the investigation and prosecution was taken after carefully considering the views of both the survivor and the prosecution team. Our resolve is clear and unwavering. Further clarity and direction will follow once the complete judgment is studied in detail,” the minister said.
