Thrissur: The Chief Election Commission has sought a report on the controversial remarks made by BJP leader B. Gopalakrishnan in Guruvayur, which were seen as attempts to polarise the community. He repeatedly made the communal statement that a Hindu MLA should be elected in Guruvayur. The CPI(M) had filed a complaint with the Election Commission against these controversial remarks. Chief Election Officer Rathan U. Kelkar clarified that legal action would be taken once the report from the district collector is received.

The Commission's media team has collected video footage of B. Gopalakrishnan’s controversial statements. Rathan Kelkar mentioned that complaints have been received from various political parties. The Commission has warned that strong action will be taken against anyone making communal remarks during election campaigns and reminded all political parties of their obligation to follow the Model Code of Conduct.

B. Gopalakrishnan alleged that despite the 48 percent Hindu population in the Guruvayur constituency, no Hindu MLA has been elected in the past five decades and that both the LDF and UDF are deliberately neglecting the Hindu community. CPI(M) Thrissur District Secretary K.V. Abdul Khader said that this represents BJP's low-level politics aimed at dividing people along religious lines.

The BJP and its predecessor, the Jana Sangh, have had no role in the development of Guruvayur town today. It is the secular parties that have contributed to the town's growth. The BJP, with no response to development issues, is resorting to communal remarks out of fear of defeat. CPI(M) District Secretary Khader added that Gopalakrishnan’s divisive politics will be rejected by the secular people of Guruvayur.
