Avian Influenza Confirmed in Four Alappuzha Panchayats, Culling Begins

Alappuzha: Avian influenza has been confirmed in four panchayats of Alappuzha district—Ambalappuzha North, Ambalappuzha South, Karuvatta and Pallippad—prompting authorities to step up containment measures.

As part of efforts to control the outbreak, culling operations will be carried out within a one-kilometre radius of the affected centres over two days. The operations are scheduled for Friday in Ambalappuzha North and Ambalappuzha South panchayats, and for Saturday in Karuvatta and Pallippad panchayats.

Officials said around 13,785 domesticated birds will be culled as part of the operation. In addition, the District Collector has imposed restrictions within a 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the affected areas. The use, sale and transportation of ducks, chickens, quails and other domesticated birds, along with their eggs, meat, droppings (manure), frozen meat and related products, have been banned for a period of one week from 8th january.

Authorities have also prohibited the rearing of birds for three months within a one-kilometre radius of the affected centres. Monitoring and control measures will continue in the district to prevent the spread of the disease.
