Thiruvananthapuram: The state of Kerala has achieved a significant milestone in cancer prevention and treatment, marking Women’s Day with the successful implementation of the "Arogyam Anandam - Akattaam Arbudam' public cancer prevention campaign by the State Health Department. Over 10 lakh women (10,69,703) participated in cancer screening as part of the campaign, as confirmed by Health Minister Veena George. Screening facilities were set up at 1,517 hospitals across the state for this purpose.

Out of those screened, 42,048 individuals were referred for further tests due to suspected cancer. Minister Veena George expressed gratitude to all the staff involved and the women’s community for their participation in the campaign. She appreciated their courage in overcoming fear and taking proactive steps towards fighting cancer. The Minister also extended Women’s Day wishes to all.

The screening campaign focused on various types of cancers, especially those that predominantly affect women. A total of 9,66,665 women were screened for breast cancer, with 20,530 women (2 percentage) suspected of having breast cancer and referred for further tests. Additionally, 7,72,083 women were screened for cervical cancer, with 22,705 women (3 percentage) being referred for follow-up tests. Another 6,52,335 women were screened for oral cancer, and 2,383 women were referred for further examinations. The campaign has confirmed 86 cases of cancer so far, with the majority being diagnosed at early stages, allowing for quicker and more effective treatment.

The Health Department has planned a year-long series of activities as part of this initiative. The first phase of the campaign primarily targeted women, with screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and other cancers. Those diagnosed with cancer will be provided with treatment and follow-up care. The screenings were entirely free for BPL (Below Poverty Line) families, while moderate charges were applied for APL (Above Poverty Line) families.

The campaign was made possible through collaboration between the government, private sectors, cooperative bodies, NGOs, and the general public. Private hospitals and laboratories also supported the initiative. Many cancers, if detected early, can be treated successfully.

Special camps were organised for specific groups such as ASHA workers, Anganwadi staff, media professionals, Secretariat employees, and Technopark employees, with the majority of people from these groups actively participating. Those who have not yet undergone screening can visit the nearest health centers for cancer screening. The Minister urged everyone to participate in the screening to ensure peace of mind, confirming that they are cancer-free.
