Thiruvananthapuram: The acting Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University, Mohanan Kunnummal, dissolved the Syndicate meeting by falsely claiming that there was no quorum. Despite the required number of members being present, he unilaterally ended the session without addressing any agenda items. The meeting, held at the university headquarters on Friday at 10 a.m., was attended by 19 Left party members, two from the BJP, and one from the Congress.

The VC had previously blocked the Syndicate from appointing S. K. Solomon as Registrar and withholding funds for the university arts festival. Important matters such as student PhDs and the PM Usha project were also left unaddressed due to the abrupt dissolution.

Following this action, Syndicate members staged a protest at the university headquarters. As per university regulations, the Syndicate will not be able to meet again for the next two months.

The move has thrown the university’s functioning into uncertainty. Numerous files concerning students, faculty, and staff remain pending, and with the financial year ending, several fund allocations are at risk. The acting VC’s decision has disrupted the institution’s development activities and day-to-day operations.
