Palakkad: Rahul Mamkoottathil resurfaced in public on Tuesday to cast his vote, sparking strong protests at the polling station in St. Sebastian’s School, Kunnathurmooodu. Rahul, who had been absconding from public view for 15 days after cases were registered against him, reappeared only after securing bail in one rape case and after the court declined to arrest him in another involving allegations of forced abortion and rape. His return to public space coincided with the second phase of polling in Palakkad.
Rahul arrived at the booth with a group of Youth Congress workers, drawing further attention as protesters gathered outside with placards and slogans. He was immediately met with loud demonstrations. DYFI and CPI M workers stuck chicken stickers on the back of his vehicle, while others held placards bearing the same image, shouting slogans and jeering as he entered the premises.
Although he has been expelled from the party, his presence alongside Youth Congress members led to allegations that he still enjoys protection from within the organisation.
The High Court is yet to hear his appeal for bail in the case filed by the first complainant.
Speaking to the media after voting, he declined to comment on the allegations, saying the matter is before the court and that he believes the truth will prevail. He added that he intends to continue residing in Palakkad.
