Kyiv: President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed calls to hold elections while Ukraine remains locked in conflict with Russia, cautioning that any such move during the ongoing war could threaten the country's cohesion.

In remarks disclosed Sunday, Zelensky characterised wartime elections as an extreme gamble, likening their potential impact to a force capable of tearing Ukraine apart. The country has kept its electoral process on hold under martial law since the invasion began, a measure that continues to draw significant public support as the nation remains focused on its military defence.

The 48-year-old leader was blunt in his assessment, suggesting that steering the country toward elections under present circumstances would effectively amount to working against its own survival.

Zelensky's comments came following pressure from his sacked defence minister Mykhailo Federov, who urged the country to find a way toward holding elections, though he stopped short of outlining any concrete plan — a stance that prompted some of his own allies to publicly distance themselves from him. Observers have flagged a host of logistical and security challenges that would complicate any wartime vote, ranging from enabling participation by soldiers, refugees and residents of occupied areas, to guarding against Russian disinformation efforts.

Having emerged from a political crisis that had briefly weakened his standing, Zelensky sought to present himself as a unifying figure, stressing that Ukrainian society and its armed forces must remain aligned rather than pulled apart. He acknowledged that the risk of the country sliding toward such a damaging rift remained real and needed to be openly recognised.
