Washington DC/Tehran: US President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed confidence that a long-negotiated agreement between Washington and Tehran to end the West Asian conflict would be finalized within a day, saying the strategic Strait of Hormuz would reopen for unrestricted maritime movement immediately afterward.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated that the agreement was expected to be signed on Sunday and indicated that commercial passage through the crucial shipping corridor would resume once the deal takes effect.

The announcement came as diplomatic momentum appeared to accelerate after weeks of uneven negotiations, intermittent military incidents and continued disagreements despite an April ceasefire that halted the most intense phase of fighting.

Iran signaled that an agreement remained possible but offered a less certain timeline. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said no signing had been fixed for Sunday, although he acknowledged that a breakthrough in the coming days remained realistic.

Pakistan, which has played as mediator during the talks, also projected optimism. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said preparations were underway for an electronic signing process followed by technical discussions, suggesting negotiations had reached their most advanced stage.

Despite the positive signals, major issues remain unresolved. Iran has insisted that future arrangements must preserve its influence over the Strait of Hormuz, where Tehran introduced restrictions and oversight measures during the conflict. The United States has opposed any long-term Iranian control over international shipping through the route.

Another central dispute concerns Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran maintains that uranium enrichment remains its sovereign right and has proposed managing enriched material within the country. Trump reiterated that any settlement would ultimately lead to the reduction and destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
